Prof. Dr. Efekan Coşkunseven is a highly respected specialist in keratoconus, cataract, and refractive surgery with nearly 30 years of clinical and surgical experience in ophthalmology, recognized both in Turkey and internationally.
Having performed more than 200,000 successful surgical procedures throughout his career, Prof. Dr. Coşkunseven is a pioneering physician who has achieved numerous firsts in the fields of keratoconus, cataract, and laser eye surgery (refractive surgery) — in Turkey and worldwide.
Today, he continues to see patients at the Eye Clinic of Medicana Hospital Zincirlikuyu, while also maintaining his academic work as an Associate Professor at Rumeli University.

Surgical Experience
Refractive Surgery (Laser Eye Surgery) Experience
Having been involved in refractive surgery since 1996, and serving as Director of the Refractive Surgery Division at Dünya Göz Hospital from 2003 to 2023, Prof. Dr. Efekan Coşkunseven has performed more than 40,000 LASIK and more than 120,000 iLASIK procedures.
- In 2000, he completed advanced refractive surgery training under Prof. Ioannis Pallikaris (University of Crete), one of the founding figures of laser eye surgery.
- In 2001, he performed the first LASIK procedure in Turkey using the WaveLight Excimer Laser.
- In 2003, he became the first surgeon in Turkey to perform LASIK with the IntraLase Femtosecond Laser.
- In 2004, he was selected by Johnson & Johnson (AMO, California, USA) as an international IntraLase Proctor (Instructor). He remains one of a small number of authorized IntraLase instructors worldwide.
- He performed the first EpiLASIK (2003) and the first Conductive Keratoplasty (CK) procedure (2004) in Turkey.
- He pioneered Wavefront and TopoLASIK, as well as Q Value LASIK applications, in Turkey.
- He was a trailblazer in Turkey for PresbyLASIK (laser treatment for near vision) and corneal inlay procedures (KAMRA, 2006).
- He has been the first physician in Turkey to perform numerous laser surgery procedures using the Schwind Microkeratome, Moria M2, and Hansatome XP platforms.
Keratoconus Treatments and Corneal Surgery Experience
Prof. Dr. Efekan Coşkunseven has been specializing in keratoconus since 1996 and has been responsible for a number of firsts in Turkey.
- In 1998, he became the second licensed physician in Turkey to receive training in Intacs intracorneal ring segment treatment.
- In 2004, he performed the first Keraring implantation using the IntraLase femtosecond laser in Turkey.
- In 2004, he performed the first corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) treatment in Turkey and established the country's first Keratoconus Diagnosis and Treatment Center.
- In 2009, he pioneered the introduction of post-CXL TopoLASIK treatments in Turkey.
- In 2010, he was recognized with an award by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) for his combined triple-treatment approach of keratoconus, CXL, and TopoLASIK.
- Between 2004 and 2006, he held the distinction of being the highest-volume Keraring (Mediphacos) implanting surgeon in the world.
- Since 2004, he has served as an international trainer for Keraring (Mediphacos) and ICL (Staar) phakic intraocular lenses.
- He holds a patent for an intrastromal corneal ring segment used in keratoconus treatment.
Cataract, Premium IOL, and Presbyopia Surgery Experience
Prof. Dr. Efekan Coşkunseven has performed over 80,000 cataract and premium intraocular lens (IOL) surgeries.
- In 2011, he became the first Turkish surgeon to perform femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery as an invited surgeon in the Dominican Republic.
- Since 2012, he has been pioneering femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery in Turkey and has performed over 40,000 such procedures.
- He has extensive experience with multifocal (trifocal), EDOF, and toric IOL implantation.
- He regularly delivers international training on premium IOLs that restore both distance and near vision following cataract surgery.
- He is among the first surgeons in Turkey to perform femtosecond laser-assisted premium IOL and multifocal lens surgery for the treatment of presbyopia.
